In recent
years, many religious denominations have begun making special accommodations
for people with disabilities. Many churches provide Bibles and
hymnals in Braille for the blind. Most have installed ramps to
enable those in wheelchairs to come in. Many have begun outreach
programs to bring the Gospel to the mentally challenged. Hearing-assistance
devices have been added in the pews of many churches to enable the elderly
and other hard-of-hearing people to hear the sermon and prayers.
However, most churches have not yet made similar accommodations
for those who are deaf. In fact, most deaf people live in a world
of spiritual darkness because there is so little effort by most churches
to reach them with the light of Christ. It's a disturbing fact that,
while 30 percent of hearing people in the world are Christians only
2 percent of deaf people are. And it is even more startling that only
7 percent of all deaf people even know the name of Jesus Christ.*
We believe it is time to change that.
In our ministry, we spread a message of awareness of the special needs
of deaf people. We tell of God's love for deaf people, for all
people with disabilities and physical challenges. We express His
desire to bring these people into His kingdom of believers. Then we
invite -- no, urge -- churches to begin providing sign language interpretation
of their services so that deaf people will feel welcomed in their congregations.
Many pastors have told us they would be happy
to begin a sign ministry in their church as soon as deaf people begin
attending. However, deaf people are not likely to come unless
services are already being signed. There is no reason for them
to come. They will hear only silence, not the word of God.
The links below will take you to Web sites with
information about sign language, deafness and, especially, deaf ministry.
We invite you to visit them to learn about the need to bring the Gospel
to deaf people and to bring deaf people to Christ.
